Marketing course for Digital Natives

Categories: Business, Innovation, Social Web

This year, beside my main job (CEO www.itive.net), I teach marketing to foreign students in the Business Department of Kauhajoki Upper Secondary School (Finland).

Yesterday we started this new 2008/09 course in which we’ll explore new & digital marketing… let me tell you that working together with highly motivated 16-18 17-21 years old students is great!

Dealing with digital natives is fascinating, they learn fast and think in an innovative way. I’m learning a lot from them too! :)

Yes, probably not all of them are web savy but the fact that they belong to this digital generation makes everything much easier. When you talk about social networks, instant messaging, etc. you see ‘acknowledging faces’ and not ‘question marks’. After this first lesson I immediately received invites from half of them to connect on Facebook (the others followed up later). It really feels like having the possibility to push the limit further.

One lesson and THEY gave me so much inspiration. I’ll share here on my blog all the insights coming from this course. There will be a lot to talk about…

But what about you? Are you working with youth? Which are your feelings/feedback about dealing with digital natives?

As usual feel free to join the conversation via Twitter / Jaiku / Friendfeed

Andrea

    Thank you for sharing this.

I have been a teacher in Italy for 2 courses in a professional institute and that was one of the most satisfying experience I have ever had.

I was teaching Flash & PHP courses one day a week, while in the other ones I was team leader in a AD company. I would say that teaching was really tiring me, much more than team leading: I came back home every evening with such a strong headache… but I was so happy and glad to do that!

I had students from 20 to 25 and they were absolutely brilliant. I still have strong friendships with them and I look forward in the future to teach again.

I guess it is really great for you to see students joining you on the most popular social network. I really would make treasure of their contacts :)

      @Enrico:

      Exactly… it feels great!

I’ve been teaching in the past too but mostly in special courses directed to mangers, executives, etc.

With digital natives it’s definitely another thing… :)

+ Just read you last DM via Twitter. Yes you can write me also in Italian or French, Spanish, Portuguese, whatever you prefer to use…
But for comments on this blog I would suggest English so it’s going to be easier for other readers to get the value out of your comments ;) Happy you like the blog!

      Ciao!

      Andrea

BTW Thumbs up from me for http://www.agglom.com/

I have had the same kind of experices when teaching students at the same age, though in the university of applied sciences… I’ll write more to our wiki (ITK’09)later, but the most remarkable experience for me was that this generation, digital natives, creates automaticly social codes how to use each media for different purposes. This is very interesting question concerning both teaching and business.

@Sanna: Interesting! I’ll check more in the WIKI then ;)
