Olympics Beijing 2008 – Brands & Social Web
Today start the Olympic Games in Beijing. If you google ‘beijing’ the first result is not about the city or more in general about China, at the top of Google’s ranking list is sitting the official website of Beijing 2008. Even Wikipedia got kicked to second place.
Together with Santa Claus the Olympic Games are, in my opinion, one of the most interesting global marketing phenomenon. Without questions this is a big challenge for China but also a great opportunity to relaunch its image. The world’s eyes are looking at Beijing. Who’s competing in those events are not only athletes, the same opportunity is there for brands. Which role brands will play? Which / How brands will step into this arena?
The other thing that I’m thinking about right now while I’m watching the great Olympics opening ceremony is ‘the online world’. Today the Internet popularity and its penetration keeps growing. Instead of waiting for news bulletins people can access and share information with few clicks from computers / mobile phones. Which role new media and social web will play during Beijing 2008?
What do you think? Let’s see if this can become a good conversation starter here on the comments section but also via Twitter / Jaiku / Friendfeed or wherever you you want to join the conversation.
